The Story of Tokyo Vibes: From One Idea to Six Floors of Creative Energy

It all started in the fall of 2023. Tokyo was still riding a post-pandemic wave of creative revival as galleries were buzzing, underground events were reappearing, and there was a sense of  something new bubbling under the surface. That’s when founder Brandon had an epiphany: what if there was a space where artists, musicians, and creative minds, both local and international, could not only showcase their work, but also build a community? Not just another party space or a room with some artworks on the wall. But something in between, something bigger, better, and brighter.

His idea was simple, but ambitious: create an event and a community where people could experience live music, visual art, pop-ups, and connection, all under one roof. A community that felt alive, not attached to a location, but rather to a vibe.

He needed people to help make it happen, so he reached out. A handful of passionate creatives and bright minds saw the potential and jumped on the boat. We were a small group at the start, just a few people with different skills, trying to bring something new to life in a city already overflowing with options. But what we were creating didn’t quite exist yet, and we knew there was room for it.

January 27, 2024 - Our First Night

We hosted the very first Tokyo Vibes event on a chilly January night at B by the Brooklyn Brewery in Nihonbashi. It was underground, a little chaotic behind the scenes, but packed with energy. We had live music, a few popups, art hung on makeshift displays, and, thank god, heavenly tacos.

None of us really knew what to expect, but somehow it just worked out.

People came, more than we imagined. The room was packed and buzzing. Artists were selling their work, strangers were connecting over music, drinks and tacos, and people started asking: when’s the next one?

We didn’t realize it yet, but something had clicked. Tokyo Vibes was alive.

Growing Fast (Too Fast)

After the success of our first event, we committed to doing more. We used our experiences of the first event as lessons to make the next one even better. So, we started planning the next edition, then another, and another. Every two or three months, we’d host a new Tokyo Vibes night, each time with new artists, a new musical lineup, and slightly more structure (but never without the chaos).

We stayed at B by the Brooklyn Brewery for another round. But over time, the team grew, the audience blew up, and the space started to feel tight. As great as that venue was, it couldn’t hold the crowd anymore. So we moved.

From Nihonbashi to Shinjuku to Nihonbashi

Our next home was WPU in Shinjuku. Bigger space, better sound, and a new vibe. That venue served us well, but again, it didn’t take long for the crowd to outgrow it.

Which led us to The A.I.R Building in Nihonbashi. A strange, beautiful multi-floor venue that gave us exactly what we were looking for: room to expand, experiment, and elevate the entire experience. Six floors meant six different vibes: a floor for music, a floor for art, a floor for pop-ups, and always a rooftop where people could breathe, talk, and take in the city night.

This was the space we didn’t know we needed. Since then, Tokyo Vibes has become more than just an event. It’s a platform, a meeting place, a moving, ever-changing ecosystem of artists, DJs, designers, photographers, performers, volunteers and guests. Some people come to showcase their work, others to discover something new. Some come alone and leave with new friends. And some keep coming back, every time.

What Makes It Work?

We don’t have a massive production team or corporate sponsors. What we DO have is a crew of people who care. Everyone involved with Tokyo Vibes, from the DJs to the door staff, from the graphic designers to the volunteers setting up and tearing down, does it because they love the community.

It’s this sense of shared ownership that makes Tokyo Vibes feel different from other events. We thrive on that balance between chaos and curation. It’s not perfect and that’s the point: It’s real.

Join the team!
